HOMELESSNESS
CONGRATULATIONS. The fact that you are here indicates you have already taken steps to solve one of your problems.
You have a home, one that includes other people who are also sincerely attempting to recover from alcohol and other drug addiction. If you need a friend to talk to, there is usually one to be found.
There is none here. A hot meal is served Monday through Friday, and there is plenty of food here to prepare for yourself on the weekend. Breakfast foods are available, lunch meat, bread and rolls are provided should you choose to save money and take your lunch to work. Truly enjoying what you eat may make recovery a little easier. If you have a favorite meal, mention it and you will probably be eating it before you leave.
There are expenses. In order to help you get started your total fee has been broken down to $30.00 per day. When you are employed and can afford it, you will be expected to pay at least a week in advance. If not, you may go to one of the labor services in the area and easily afford this amount. It is advisable to pay as much as possible in advance in order to free yourself to accept a good job, should one be made available, and wait for a paycheck. It is an unfortunate reality that you may not fall behind on your fees, and continue to stay here. Therefore, if you are here, another obstacle has been removed.
Often people in recovery have experienced legal difficulties. If not dealt with, these things can stand as a roadblock between you and sobriety. They do not go away by themselves, and may come up again, just when things are starting to go right for you. Quite often, facing up to them is not as difficult as imagined. Fines or worse may result, but at least it would be behind you. This does not have to be done immediately, but when it is, you will discover that anyone making a sincere effort to straighten out their lives is looked at favorably. A phone call or letter may result in regaining your drivers license, or afford you the freedom of not feeling threatened with arrest at every turn. It is not too late, these things can be accomplished while you are here.
The following text is issued to each person upon their entering New Life Recovery Project. It was written in 1987 and holds true today. That was before the web.It was intended to be read by those at the end of their rope.
PROJECT MANUAL
Welcome to New Life Recovery Project. If you are reading this you have probably just been through some rough times. We have all had problems. Hopefully, at New Life you will be able to make the major problems minor, and the minor problems non-existant.
Recovery from alcohol or other drug addiction is extremely difficult. You do not need the added pressure of homelessness, hunger, legal problems, and past financial obligations to sabotage your sobriety.
You will find on the following pages a plan to help you remove some of these obstacles. As I once heard said at an A.A. meeting, " We are not bad people getting good, we are sick people getting better".
GOOD LUCK IN YOUR NEW LIFE.
